Beyond Zoning: Co-creating a Community Strategy for Accessory Dwelling Units (Expanded Live Encore)

ADUs have the potential to increase affordable rental housing and home ownership. However, the barriers are also significant.

Most regions that want more ADUs are struggling with gaining the benefits they hope ADUs will deliver.

Some local governments are working on reducing the complicated set of zoning policies, parking requirements, setback rules, and other barriers that make it illegal or difficult to add ADUs—but that is not typically sufficient to significantly impact that local housing supply.

What’s usually missing is a multi-faceted ADU Strategy for overcoming the obstacles.

This webinar expands on a 30-minute webinar we did on May 10. You can watch the 30-minute version On Demand HERE. Please watch the recording and then invite others in your community to participate on June 22 where the pace will be slower, and we’ll have more time for questions and discussion.

This webinar is ideal for communities that are already interested in developing a housing strategy that includes ADUs. Even if there is political will to allow more flexible housing options, most local governments and coalitions lack the resources, time, or expertise to design the policy changes and integrate those policies into a housing strategy that brings the most benefits with the fewest risks.

Learn how to Co-create and fund a successful strategy

This webinar will share about InsightFormation's Community Strategy Engagement Accelerator for 2023 (CSEA-23).

The (CSEA-23 program will help local coalitions create a customized local strategy map along with supporting details to begin implementing a highly effective and economical strategy. This 12-month program combines eLearning with interactive workshops, customized coaching, peer-engagement, and the leveraging of the excellent content from the Housing Solution Summit. Having a coalition work together on the strategy will enhance their application for the forthcoming HUD funding.

Coming Soon: Local Housing Policy Grants

The recent omnibus spending bill allocated $85 million to HUD for establishing a new competitive grant program to provide funding for local governments and housing coalitions to do planning for policy and system changes. The details and terminology for this grant program are still being worked on, but money should become available late in 2023.

Now is the time to get your coalition ready to win your region’s share of these dollars. This webinar will give you some of the latest information on these grants, which are designed to help communities identify and remove barriers to affordable housing production and preservation.

Fast Action BONUS

The first 100 people who register will receive access to 3 of the 20+ sessions from the Housing Solution Summit's Deep Dive Day on ADUs. These in-depth sessions provide further exploration and practical guidance on various aspects of ADU implementation.

It takes more than zoning changes for a successful ADU ecosystem

Many cities and counties are seeing that ADUs have the potential of expanding the housing options in their communities, but they also face opposition based on a variety of fears. Too often, after a contentious political brawl, zoning changes are made to allow ADUs, but far fewer ADUs get built than the proponents are hoping for. Furthermore, there may be enough problems that the opponents can claim their opposition was justified.

What's generally lacking is a multi-faceted strategy to create the types of ADUs that bring the most benefit to neighborhoods and cities and that minimize the risks. Modifying the zoning is only one of many parts of a well-crafted strategy.
