Increasing the supply of housing is essential for addressing the housing crisis that is destroying many lives and is likely to cause unprecedented homelessness. The need for more places for people to live--especially at relatively affordable rates--is urgent and dire. Part of the strategy for many communities is increasing Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). This can be very beneficial, but it is not trivial. Many communities have numerous barriers that were put in place decades ago that many many sensible approaches illegal. And, there are misperceptions about ADUs that can cause neighborhood resistance. That is why a multi-faceted strategy is so important.
This webinar introduces many elements of a robust strategy for helping communities scale up a variety of programs that support increasing ADUs as one part of a response to the housing shortage. There are many things that can be done by communities that then open up many new opportunities for individuals that would not otherwise be available. The webinar introduces powerful concepts that will be featured a full day of sessions in the “Deep Dive Day #3” that is part of the Housing Solution Summit. Bill Barberg, a co-founder of the Population Health Learning Collaborative, is the President and Founder of InsightFormation, Inc., a Minnesota-based consulting and technology company that helps communities, regions, and states address complex social and health issues that require multi-stakeholder collaboration. His deep background in strategy implementation has been featured in dozens of conference presentations and webinars, and he both organized and hosted the recent virtual summit on Innovations in Naturally Affordable Housing. He has been a pioneer in many projects that have pushed forward the practices for achieving Collective Impact on a wide range of issues—from addressing the opioid crisis to transforming housing re-developments into Communities of Hope in Detroit.
Bill was selected to write the chapter on “Implementing Population Health Strategies” for the book, “Solving Population Health Problems through Collaboration” (Routledge, 2017). His recommendations for using strategy maps is featured as a core recommendation in the new report by the National Academy of Public Administration. Bill recently co-authored a paper for the Journal of Change Management on “Leading Social Transformations to Create Public Value and Advance the Common Good”.
